Stephen J. Goodson will present a workshop, over two Saturdays, on building skills in Push Hands. This soft two-person exercise teaches Ti Fang, the core skill of Taiji as a soft Martial Art. Following the tradition of Mr. Robert W. Smith, Professor Cheng Man-Ching and the Tai Chi Classics we will explore:

On the first Saturday, August 18: Push Hands, the first of Taiji’s three two-person exercises. We will examine the shape, structure and ‘the game’ the Grasp Sparrow’s Tail exercise. Using just the four postures of Push Hands we will explore the traditional exercise and uncover the purpose of the light, four-ounce touch.

On the second Saturday, August 25: Ti-Fang, the soft uprooting method unique to Tai Chi. This session will explore the subtle technique that allows “4 ounces to deflect a thousand pounds”. Using drills and practical tests, students will gain a deeper understanding of the substance and function that is built into Tai Chi's two-person exercises and the form—literally no speed, no strength and a light, four-ounce touch.

Prerequisite to attend the class: you must be able to independently do a Tai Chi form. We will make reference to and rely on your knowledge of the postures many times. Push Hands beginners, advanced players and teachers will find these sessions deeply insightful and fun!
